Any Mingus fans out there?

i picked up his best of c.d. today and i must say this is good stuff. anyone have any opinions??

I've got a couple of great live Mingus recordings from '64 featuring Eric Dolphy shredding a bass clarinet. Dannie Richmond, Mingus's long-standing drummer, is behind the kit directing the proceedings on some very long and great versions of Pork Pie Hat and Fables of Faubus. Also have Antibes '60, again with Dolphy and Richmond. This is early 60s free jazz along the lines of, and in step with, Trane and Miles' experiments in modalities.

Mingus I can say is not my favorite. I guess I know too much about his personality for me to really let go and enjoy.
In NY, it's popular to play his tunes. They are becoming standards and I must say they are really fun to play. The forms are pretty complex and the melodies are great.
I like his compositions but not all of the recordings.
Reincarnation of a Love Bird , Peggy's Blue Skylight, Fables of Faubus are nice to play.
Tijuana moods is a great record.
I'm looking to get his record/cd called -ME MYSELF AND EYE . Three Drummers are featured on one cut. I heard it on the Gaddaporium.
Steve Gadd, Danny Richmond and Joe Chambers play together and solo together on a tune called - Three Worlds of Drums. Steve really tears it up and is in his prime. Charles Mingus doesn't play on this record since he was sick and was not able to play.

I really like how Danny Richmond plays with Mingus. He's funky.

Well, when someone punches the teeth out of his trombone player / chart writer (Jimmy Knepper) and then sets Jimmy up by planting drugs in his home then it affects me. Mingus did this because Jimmy threatened to sue Mingus for the damage to his mouth.

Buddy was supporting his family when he was in his teens and was not allowed to play with kids for fear that he might hurt himself.
He could have done much worse damage than he did. I don't know of him actually physically hurting someone or a band member ( although words can really damage people).
He was an ass, but Mingus was on another level.

I think being a decent human being comes first.. Everything else is icing on the cake.

You can always go back and see how a person was brought up, and see how it affected them later in life. Not that you can't change later, but it's just a tremendous amount of discipline to change.
